Site Migration Wizard

Digest

The Site Migration Wizard is a new tool available with the release of Cascade Server 6.0. The wizard is accessed from the System Menu, which is located on the far left of the top blue menu bar, and serves to guide System Administrators through the process of migrating a Target and the contents of the Target's Base Folder into a Site.

Concept

More Insight into the addition of Sites to the system

In versions of Cascade 5.x and previous, the system used Targets as the organizing principle around which sites were based. With the release of Cascade Server 6.0, Targets have been deprecated in favor of the system's new Sites feature. For more insight into migrating from Targets to Sites, visit our Migrating from Global Area to Sites Webinar.

Using the Site Migration Wizard

To access the Site Migration Wizard:

  1. Click on the System Menu icon located at the far left of the top menu bar.
  2. In the System Menu drop-down, select Utilities -> Site Migration Wizard.

Note: Non-Administrator users must be granted the ability to access the Site Migration Wizard via their roles.

Step 1 - Start Migration

  • Name - The name of the site.  This field is not required. If left empty, the name of the selected Base Target will be used as the Site Name.
  • Site URL - The URL of the published site (e.g. http://www.hannonhill.com). This field is required and will be assigned to the Site created during the migration process.
  • Default Metadata Set - This Metadata Set will be assigned to the Base Folder created inside the new Site.  If no Metadata Set is selected, a new default Metadata Set will be created inside the Site and will be assigned to the Base Folder of the Site.
  • Base Target - The Base Folder of this target and all of the assets beneath the Base Folder are moved into the new Site.  The Target chosen in this field and all of its descendant Targets will be removed from the system during the final step of the migration process. The Destinations that belong to the Targets are handled in the next step.
  • Submit

Step 2 - Destination Selection

  • A list of Destinations that belong to the Target selected in Step 1 or its child Targets are shown.
  • Choose Destinations to migrate into the Site - Any Destination selected during this step will be moved into the new Site automatically.  Any Destinations that remain unselected will be removed from the system permanently.
  • Submit

Step 3 - Role Assignment

  • Choose Roles to associate with the Site.
  • Only Roles applicable to Sites appear.
  • Notice that User and Group assignment selectors appear and disappear whenever a Role is added or removed from the Role assignment selector at the top.
  • Each User and Group selector is specific to a particular Role and is denoted by the name of the Role displayed in the heading.
  • Assign any number of Users and Groups to the assigned Roles.
  • Submit

Step 4 - Summary

  • The Site Name, Site URL, Default Metadata Set, and Target are displayed at the top.  Non-required fields that are left empty are not displayed.
  • A list of the selected Destinations is displayed for final review.
  • A list of Users and Groups is displayed for each Role assigned during Step 3.
  • User can either Submit or execute a Test Migration by clicking the "Test Migration" button next to the"Submit" button.
  • Running a Test Migration is highly recommended for the first time to display any potential problems with the site migration.

Test Migration

  • Problems - Contains a list of warnings and errors that can prevent a successful migration.
    • Warnings will not prevent the migration from successfully completing but if left unresolved could cause the expected behavior of some assets to change.
    • Errors will prevent the migration process from completing until rectified.
    • Both warnings and errors will be coupled with a suggested solution.
  • Asset Factories to Migrate - List of Asset Factories that reference base assets that will be moved during the migration.  These Asset Factories will be moved out of the global area and into the new Site.
  • Content Types to Migrate - List of Content Types that are referenced by Pages contained in the Base Folder being migrated.
  • Configuration Sets to Migrate - List of Page Configuration Sets that are referenced directly by Pages contained in the Base Folder being migrated and Page Configuration Sets that are referenced by Content Types that are referenced by Pages contained in the Base Folder being migrated.
  • Destinations to Migrate - List of Destinations selected during Step 2 of the Site Migration Wizard.
  • Modified Publish Sets - List of Publish Sets that will be modified as a result of the migration.  These Publish Sets reference assets that are contained in the Base Folder being migrated.  These assets will be removed from the Publish Sets.
  • Targets to Remove - Children of the Target selected during Step 1 of the Site Migration Wizard and the Base Target itself.
