Using XSLT Formats to Dynamically Configure Layout and Color Scheme for 100 Student Organization Web Sites

Timothy Gilman, Web Programmer, Willamette University

The Web Development department at Willamette University was tasked with developing a way to allow Student Clubs and Organizations to create and update their web sites and to easily transfer the responsibility from year to year. Each site needed to have the ability for customization, including images, layouts, and color schemes, as well as standard Page Types available to each site. This also had to be portable to over 100 sites in any given year, so it required a solution that was standardized for easy maintenance and training.

In this session, Timothy Gilman will explain how the university solved this problem by developing a basic site that can be configured using a single configuration page to determine the layout/color scheme, header image, etc., for the entire site. He will also touch on their use of Web Services to build out the default site, Asset Factories for the standard Page Types, and all the other applicable assets.
