 AMA Higher Ed 2014

This year we attended the AMA Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education for the first time. It’s safe to say it greatly exceeded our expectations. AMA Higher Ed was filled with great presentations, excellent social media coverage, and some very fun attendees.

Major Takeaways

Be Authentic
Don’t try to be something you’re not. Students can tell immediately when a brand isn’t being real on social media. Many students said they would look to a university’s hashtags to see what the school was promoting. The easiest way to tell a consistent story, is to tell the real story, then there’s nothing to keep straight. Focus on creating genuine content, rather than social content.

Throwing Money at a Problem is NOT a Solution

Not only is it not a solution, but many times it’s not an option. While some schools have large Marketing and PR departments, often times it’s a small team keeping the ship afloat. The trick is to work with what you have. Often making due with the resources you have available can yield unique solutions that will stand out from the rest that took the traditional route. Focus on your strategy, not expensive tools, otherwise you wind up with an expensive “solution,” that may not work.

Be a Branded House; Not a House of Brands

Students look to universities’ websites first, then to email, mail, search, and so on. You need to have a consistent story and brand experience that will follow a student from channel to channel, medium to medium, and department to department. Fortunately, the more genuine you are (see above) the easier it is to be consistent.
