CUC Spotlight Session: Web Services

Using web services with Cascade Server was one of the most popular topics at last year’s User Conference. We saw many interesting presentations that showed how different organizations are leveraging Cascade Server’s web services API in order to automate processes, generate reports, and integrate with other systems. This year’s conference will feature sessions on new ways of using web services. Let’s take a look.

Framework for effortless migration

Prashanth Gurrala, who is a Senior Programmer and Cascade Technical Administrator at Northern Illinois University , will host a session entitled “Framework for effortless migration”, in which he will discuss how NIU used .NET web services to migrate over 400 sites into Cascade Server. NIU has been fine-tuning their Cascade framework over the years to provide the flexibility to bulk change and migrate into new templates effortlessly. Using a .NET application with Cascade Web services, NIU was able to migrate 400+ sites into 3 different templates over past 2 years and finally with RWD-Bootstrap. Prashanth will also show how NIU utilizes smart fields and Velocity formats to create slideshows, collapsible left navigation blogs and other dynamic content blocks.

A form to be reckoned with: PHP, MVC, OOP, Web Services

Mark Nokes, Applications Administrator at the University of Central Oklahoma, is preparing his session, called “A form to be reckoned with: PHP, MVC, OOP, Web Services”. He will cover how UCO integrated a custom PHP form builder class into Cascade Server. The class uses MVC architecture and Object-Oriented Programming, and it works as a stand-alone application. The form can be inserted into a page via a page chooser. Note that you don’t have to have a lot of technical expertise to benefit from Mark’s presentation. Less technical users will get just as much out of it.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Web Service

Mark will also assist his colleague, Darren Denham, in his presentation. Darren is the web content manager at UCO. In their session, entitled “Dr. Scriptlove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Web Services”, Darren will demonstrate how UCO used the web services API to accomplish a multitude of tasks, including: creating orphaned asset reports, removing orphaned assets from the web server and creating zip archives, performing rapid content updates to multiple files, listing node data, and adding users to a group. UCO’s web team will demonstrate their examples, open the discussion up to Q&A, and even share their code.

Data Visualization

Erik Espana, Senior Web Developer at Union College, will show how his team used web services to create insightful Cascade Server data visualizations. Participants will learn how web services and JavaScript can be combined to create entity relationship diagrams from your Cascade Server implementation. Erik will provide code examples to help others get started and discuss other ways these tools can be applied.

It should be noted that other presentations will touch on web services as well. As you can see, there will be plenty of things to talk about, and hopefully, you’ll be inspired to try new ways to leverage the power of using web services with Cascade Server.

What about you? Have you implemented web services to extend the functionality of your CMS? We’d love to hear from you. Feel free to comment in the comments section below.

And be sure to register for the Cascade User Conference! Deadline is August 14.
