Hannon Hill volunteering at animal shelter

The Hannon Hill team appreciates the fact that we are part of a larger community, and we certainly know how fortunate we are both as a company and as individuals. That’s why we strive to give back to our community through participating in community service projects a few times a year. Last week, a group of Hannon Hillers volunteered at Fulton County Animal Services, which houses hundreds of homeless cats and dogs who have been picked up in Metro Atlanta, seized as part of a cruelty investigation, or surrendered by their owners. This event proved to be one of the most fun, yet also eye-opening activities we have participated in to date.

Our day was spent playing with cats and kittens as part of the enrichment program, walking and playing with dogs, taking pictures for FCAS’s adoption website, and a few brave souls even rolled up their sleeves to bathe some of the not-so-fresh smelling doggies. In the weeks leading up to our volunteer day, we hosted a drive in our office to procure much-needed supplies such as towels, newspapers, food… and we couldn’t resist picking up a few surprises from the shelter’s Amazon wishlist as well! The majority of the volunteers in our group are proud pet parents themselves (seriously, everyone had their phones out at lunch to share photos of their fur babies) and there isn’t a person among us who doesn’t have a soft spot for animals, so it was no surprise that our heartstrings were definitely tugged throughout the day. Trust us, if we could have adopted them all, we would have. We would definitely recommend checking out the shelter’s website to see some of the sweet doggies and kitties that are up for adoption. Below are some of the pictures we took.

My takeaway from the event is that while I have no doubt the animals appreciated the extra love and attention, I think our team benefitted from our community service day in ways we didn’t expect. In fact, we’re still talking about it! If you are looking for service projects for your teams to participate in, I would highly recommend looking into volunteering at a local animal shelter as the benefits are plentiful:

  • It breaks you out of your routine and gives you a new appreciation for what you have

  • It is an excellent opportunity for team building

  • It gets you in a “do more with less” mindset, which can increase creativity

  • It increases empathy, which benefits you not only on a personal level but on a professional level as well

  • It allows you to make a small contribution to society, and who knows, maybe you will inspire others to “pay it forward” as well

Thank you, FCAS, for letting us spend such an unforgettable afternoon with you!
