How Do I Document My Content Strategy?

Carefully crafted strategies often precede success. This is true in business, marketing, and content marketing. Keeping the contributors, designers, and influencers responsible for making strategies successful is critical to success.

Finding ways to incorporate your strategy into daily activities will help your team stay focused on your goals. You can facilitate this using tools you already have in ways that make sense for your team.

Rolling out your content strategy with tools your team uses to create content is a practical way to facilitate engagement. You can take it bit by bit or push out entire campaigns at once.  Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Collaboration Tools

Teams of all sizes use collaboration tools to move projects forward. Chances are, your team does too. Why not use yours to drive engagement?

Here’s how:

  1. Divide up your content based on how your team works best. A few ideas are by piece, department, campaign, quarter or month.
  2. Tie milestones or activities to members of your team, based on their contribution to the effort. Don’t forget to include planning or feedback sessions as both are critical to content development.
  3. Create tasks or assignments specific to each piece to create ways to move collateral (and strategies) forward.
  4. As content is created, link drafts to your tool either with in-context tagging or product integrations. Hint: many platforms automatically link to Google Docs.

Content Management Systems

Storing your content strategy where most of your content lives is an awesome way to keep your campaign goals and tactics top of mind. Depending on your CMS, there may be tools built right in to help make your strategy a reality.
