Cascade CMS Chronicles: Update Spotlight for Cascade CMS 8.6

By Bradley Wagner — Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 at 11:00am

Cascade CMS 8.6 is full of features and fixes that make Cascade CMS even better. For a complete list of all the changes that come with this upgrade, read the release notes.

More robust content checks that can be enabled and/or disabled at site or system level:

For quite some time, Cascade CMS has checked content to help contributors catch misspelled words, broken links, and issues that may impact site accessibility. Cascade CMS 8.6 takes this a step further with a completely redesigned UI that streamlines content checks. Now, content can be reviewed for various errors faster with fewer screen reloads.

Administrators can enforce system-wide content checks or at the individual site level for specific users using role-based abilities. Once enabled and configured, new content will be reviewed for Section 508 accessibility, broken links, and spelling errors before edits are submitted...or whichever ones you select.

How it works: All content checks are performed when the modal is loaded. Content that passes gets a green checkmark and message letting users know that they’re ready for the next step in the publishing process.

Accessing this feature is super easy. To start, upgrade to Cascade CMS 8.6...duh. Then, follow the instructions below. See, that was easy.

At the System level:

  1. Open the right flyout by clicking the triple lines icon in the top right-hand corner
  2. Click Administration
  3. Click Preferences and scroll down to the Content section
  4. Enable/disable desired Content Checks

At the Site level:

  1. Switch to the desired Site
  2. Click on Manage Site at the top
  3. Click Site Settings and scroll down to Content Checks
  4. If you wish to inherit the system settings, check “Inherit from system preferences”; otherwise, enable/disable the desired checks

Note: This step enables checks but does not require them for individual users. To force content checks, ensure “Bypass Accessibility, Link, and Spell Checks, when Submitting Content Changes’ is off for all desired user roles.

Uploading files in bulk is a breeze with the new multi-file upload interface

In previous versions of Cascade CMS, users created zip archives to upload multiple files at once. In 8.6, users can upload multiple files directly from the file creation screen.

Here’s how:

  1. Click ‘Add Content’ and then select an Asset Factory to create a new file
  2. Drag and drop multiple files from your desktop or click on ‘choose some from your computer’ to open select files from your system. Individual files will be uploaded and listed automatically.
  3. Add more by repeating the previous step, or remove some by clicking on the ‘X’
  4. Click ‘Submit’ to create the files in the chosen parent folder

This update makes uploading videos, pictures, recordings, PDFs, and any other content quick and easy.

Note: Just because you can add several files at once, doesn’t mean you have to. You can always go back to “single file” interface by clicking the Back button at the top of the screen.

Identifying assets by name just got easier

Do you manage or contribute content to multiple sites? If so, then you know how hard it is to keep up with various assets as they are renamed or moved.

Cascade CMS 8.6 helps by adding more context to asset links, so users can quickly identify which site assets belong to when searching, reviewing owned content, or just viewing content in chooser panels.

If you’re excited about this, you’ll love everything else Cascade CMS 8.6 has to offer. Click here to read the full release notes and start the upgrade process now.
