Community Service Day: Georgia Special Olympics Duck Tagging

By Ali Simmons — Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 at 11:00am

We are always searching for new causes to volunteer with, and I was so excited when we found out that the Special Olympics Georgia needed help with a fundraiser happening on Friday, August 11th.

The Special Olympics provides an environment for individuals with intellectual disabilities to train and compete in athletic competitions. This environment allows athletes to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy with their fellow competitors and the community. SOGA hosts dozens of events each year with over 180 different programs and serves more than 27,115 athletes in 120 countries.

The fundraising event that we helped prep for is the Annual Duck Pluck, and it directly finances athlete’s participation in the State Games. For the event to be a success, 10,000 rubber ducks needed to be tagged with new donation numbers the week prior. That’s where we came in!

Along with another Atlanta-based company, Hannon Hillers removed old tags and added new numbers to all 10,000 ducks in two hours.

For the event occurring on Friday, August 11th, a small number of lucky ducks will get plucked out of a pool in North Atlanta. The people that “adopted” the winning ducks will receive one of the grand prizes listed on their site. Luckily for you, there are still some ducks to adopt before the event!
