One of the perks of being a Cascade CMS user is the vibrant community of developers, administrators, marketers, and end-users.  Cascade CMS users are always willing to collaborate, which drives the product roadmap.  In an effort to further encourage collaboration, we will be spotlighting individual users to learn more about them.

In our first blog post in the “From the Desk of…” series, we will be spotlighting Jill Whitaker, Director of Web Services, with Southern Utah University.  Let’s learn a little more about Jill!

What do you do for Southern Utah University?

I am the Director of Web Services. I started as the "Webmaster" at SUU in 2001, which was a catch-all phrase for someone doing the design/coding/writing of everything on the website, and I have been the Director since 2010.

What do you love about your job?

I like that it is always evolving and changing. When reflecting back, I'm not doing the same job I was 10 or 5 years ago due to changing technology and changing staff. It definitely doesn't get stale.

How long have you been working with Cascade CMS, and how have you seen the product improve since you started?

We launched our site publishing out of Cascade CMS in August 2012, so over 5 years now. I admit I was nervous about updating to Cascade CMS 8 since it looks so visually different than previous versions, and I thought my site contributors would struggle with the change, but they've all found it really easy to use and love the change. So that makes me happy because Cascade CMS 8 is faster, more usable on multiple devices, and just feels more modern.

What have been your favorite projects that you have worked on since starting with Southern Utah University?

Launching new things always gives me a sense of satisfaction. Redesigns are often a source of great stress but so gratifying when done. We were the first school in Utah to launch a responsive web design, and that made me excited. Getting Cascade CMS up and in production was a rush because we didn't have a CMS in place before that and we started publishing our site from Cascade CMS just 2 weeks before my daughter was born!

How do you spend your time when you’re not working?

I spend time with my 5-year-old daughter, and I like to run, read, and garden.

What were you doing before working for Southern Utah University?

I did graphics in television news. I enjoyed the thrill of the changing news cycle, but the irregular hours were tiring.

If you could visit anywhere in the world that you have never been, where would you go?

I've always wanted to visit Greece, it just looks so beautiful.

What is your favorite movie/TV show and why?

I find that I don't really enjoy much TV lately, but for some reason, the show InkMaster fascinates me. I'm not covered in tattoos nor do I have any desire to be, but it's interesting the amazing art that can be created on someone's flesh.
